Coping with Great Value

Here we go.
Confession time.
I can't cope with great value deals! All months that I travel abroad (this year 3 already, and 4 will be this Thursday) I go mad.
All months of Sales - June July, December January - if I score great sale (which I always seem to do) I go totally out of control! Or 20% hq deals too. In the chantecaille sale I got all palettes they have currently on their webside, and neimanmarcus too! I can't just get one and leave happy! I got a lovely lola eye liner brush and I feel I should stock up on them as they are clearing them up. It's a lovely brush, don't get me wrong - great value but I already have Mac 208,209, 2 brushed 266, 212, full size bb ultra fine liner, mini size bb ultra fine liner. Like - great bargain right. Why I feel I should buy a spare, it's not like I will be stuck for them or anything!

So this is where the trouble comes. this is where I need intervention and help
Copping with 'GREAT VALUE' how?

  1. Lots of times sales aren't really as good as they seem, and often they come back around
so its not that hard for me to say no, just remind myself that for one its just make up and I have lots of it, then remind my self that there are even more sales coming down the pike. Sales are often the worse time to buy because the discount makes us want to buy items that we probably would not buy if they were full priced-- I make a rule for myself to not buy anything I would not pay full priced for because if I would not buy it at the normal price than I probably don't like it as much as the sale is making me think I do.

I also think that having the budget makes you feel more in control and prioritize your purchases. It is like being on a calorie restricted diet. As soon as you have the limit you will analyze how much you need each item much more and your purchases will be smarter which=less waste.
this was posted on mu board, and I want to share it here too - thanks to angielynne

  2. I agree with Angie... ALSO QUIT SEEKING THE DEALS.

If you are not looking for the next big deal, then you will not be able to purchase during them.

MUA has a crown mentality. WE as a collective think its a great deal and we should all get in on it. BUT you are an individual. You do not need the crowd to feel whole.

here is a little snipet I will leave you with.

  3. I completely agree with Kat and Happy Hippo--Ignorance is bliss! Instead use that travel time for some other purpose. Did you see the Shopaholic Movie? Keep walking past those store windows for the win!

If you KNOW you lose control in these situations, really its far far better not to get into them at all. It's like keeping a chocolate cake in your house when you are on a diet. Why tempt yourself? Keep walking! :)

Have fun on your trip!!! :)

  4. Yes ignorance is bliss. We cannot trust ourselves when seeing sales or deals (and why would we want to? It's torture!). If we never know it exists, we cannot want. So I just delete any sephora emails so I can't even see what I'm missing.

  5. A few weeks ago I started to unsubscirbe to a lot of websites' emails, esp the ones for sales and GWPs. I live in Canada now and either its a pain to order online from them or they don't ship to Canada, so why bother to tempt myself. When I did my unnecessary order from Sephora.com last Summer on my Canadian ip to send to my old work address in California, where I was going back to spend a week, it took me forever and ended up having to order over the phone. I didn't get my points or rebates or whatever from ordering it online due to the diff country locations.

So now I stay out of the loop from makeup brand sites. I'm happier and easier to not temp myself.

  6. I have a problem with sales and deals too. Everytime I see one I feel like I should buy something because I'd be saving money --- but actually, if I buy something just because it's on sale, it's not really saving money because I'm spending... especially if I don't have a budget set up. If I do, then the sales are just something extra getting in the way of what I really want to buy. So... I basically decided that I shouldn't buy anything on sale that I wouldn't buy full price. If I didn't really want it enough to begin with, what difference does the sale make?

  7. Hehe I am a total sucker for sales! I always end up hauling major!

Now I'm more selective cause there had been more sales (due to this economy & stuff).

I think that comment re "Would I buy this at normal price?" would help me alot! Thanks gals!
